It’s official if you trust our local media, Winston-Salem is part of a nationwide defund (or abolish) the police debate ignited by the murder of George Floyd and so many Black victims before him. But if last Monday’s Public Safety meeting was any indication, our Council isn’t prepared to address how the WSPD polices Black communities in Winston or institute actual community control of the WSPD. And defunding and or abolishing the police is not even on the Winston-Salem City Council’s radar. The Journal’s front-page headline last Tuesday read, “City may pull $1M from the police.” But that headline gives the wrong impression.
On Thursday, the Winston-Salem Journal’s Michael Hewlett reported that Amber Burch pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of Tommy Dean Welch as well as armed robbery and accessory after the fact in the of murder Joshua Fredrick Weltzer. With Burch’s former boyfriend and accomplice Pazuzu Algarad taking his life in prison in the fall of 2015, we may never get a full picture of how Algarad and Burch Were able to elude justice for five years. Welch and Weltzer were executed by Algarad and Burch separately in the fall and summer of 2009. Those two were not Bonnie and Clyde, they were two unsophisticated criminals living in a filthy, disgusting house. They weren’t on the run.
Have you seen all the clown sighting stories circulating online? The Winston-Salem Journal has run several stories on creepy criminal clowns appearing all over the Triad. The clown hysteria started in Winston earlier this week when the Journal reported two instances of clowns attempting to lure kids into the woods in Northeast Winston. But none of these national or local stories have been substantiated. Police don’t have any clowns in custody.
