The output of the city’s paper of record has been a little lackluster lately. After the ink dried on BAT’s acquisition of Reynolds a couple of weeks ago, the Journal has largely ignored issues of importance to residents in Winston-Salem. Instead, they have covered a high-profile murder case in Davidson County and other stories that just aren’t that relevant to Winston’s urban core. To my dismay, Friday the Journal published a story on Craig Engels. Engles, an Olympic-hopeful runner from Pfafftown is perhaps more famous for his mullet haircut than his running.

Last week the New York Times published a report which found that 110 of the 111 brains of former NFL players studied by Dr. Ann McKee, a leading neuroscientist were found to have CTE. CTE is a rare brain disorder caused by repeated head trauma. For years now a growing body of research has shown that shown that playing football can lead to long-term, negative health results. These studies are increasingly hard to ignore. The correlation between football, concussions, and CTE is being established more and more with each new study.

Back in May 2012, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway bought the Winston-Salem Journal and a host of other small and medium-sized papers from Media General. Five years ago there was optimism that Warren Buffett would reinvigorate the Journal. Sadly, five years later, we now know better. Buffett hasn’t invested in our local paper, it’s just another asset to him. Sunday’s Winston-Salem Journal had an excellent cover story on Kalvin Michael Smith.

Readers of the Winston-Salem Journal have been treated to a wealth of articles over the past few days. Typically the Journal has one or two articles a day that are worth reading, supplemented with sports and advertising. But a confluence of events; the upcoming of elections and British American Tobacco’s recently announced bid to purchase Reynolds American has caused the Journal to dramatically increase its output, like the days of old. Last Friday, the Journal had a good article on early voting. Below the fold there was an informative piece on infant mortality rates in Forsyth County.

Murder in Winston-Salem Is Overshadowed By Clown Hoax

Have you seen all the clown sighting stories circulating online? The Winston-Salem Journal has run several stories on creepy criminal clowns appearing all over the Triad. The clown hysteria started in Winston earlier this week when the Journal reported two instances of clowns attempting to lure kids into the woods in Northeast Winston. But none of these national or local stories have been substantiated. Police don’t have any clowns in custody.

Camel City Dispatch Resumes After A Two Month Absence

On the first of September Winston’s online alternative news source, the Camel City Dispatch posted its first new content in two months. At the end of June without warning or explanation CCD stopped posting new content. In mid-August CCD finally explained their hiatus. On their Facebook page CCD stated that they had gotten burned out and needed a break. After four years of covering Winston-Salem, they needed a break.
