Where Is Wake Forest?

Yesterday the Wake Forest High School Cougars defeated Mallard Creek at BB&T Stadium. For Wake Forest, this was their second straight 4AA State Championship. Ironically the Wake Forest Cougars, dressed in blue and white won on the home field of Wake Forest University; the school that left their community decades ago.

City Council Notes: DTWS Strip Club Zoned Out Of Business, Rolling Hills Bonds Approved

Here’s a look at some highlights from Monday’s full meeting of the Winston-Salem City Council

  • A resolution honoring the Winston-Salem Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, INC was approved.
  • A resolution honoring the city’s SOAR, Successful Outcomes After Release Program was approved. More job programs are needed to reintegrate ex-prisoners back into society. SOAR received 120 applications for the eight slots available in the program.
  • Ordnance renaming a disconnected section of Maple Street to Earline Parmon

Gentrification Continues In Winston’s Holly Avenue Neighborhood

 

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that an apartment renovation project is underway on Holly Avenue. Owner and developer Jeff Zenger is transforming the apartments at 648 Holly Avenue. When the 27-unit building is completed it will be known as “The Livery.” Apartments at the Livery will be equipped with a host of modern amenities, rents will range from $845 to over $900.

SciTech: More Public Relations Than Panacea

This year’s SciTech just concluded yesterday. SciTech is a two week summer day camp for elementary and middle school students that immerses them in math and science. SciTech also takes students on field trips to places like Caterpillar’s Axle manufacturing plant, so that they can see real world applications of what they’re learning in the classroom.

Mayor Joines, Democrat Council Members Endorsed Clinton At Wake

Nearly a month ago, before North Carolina’s Democratic primary, Bill Clinton visited Wake Forest. The former president spoke at Wake’s law school before a couple hundred students and members of the community. Melissa Harris-Perry’s Wake the Vote brought Clinton to Wake. Clinton spoke to young voters, a demographic which clearly prefers Bernie Sanders, Clinton urged them to vote for Hillary.
